Trump Signs Executive Order To Rename Boards Of Canada As ‘Boards Of America’
WASHINGTON—Responding to the escalating trade war with neighbouring Canada, U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order Friday officially renaming the electronic music duo Boards of Canada to "Boards of America."
"The United States is giving serious consideration to changing the name of Boards of Canada to Boards of America in that we don’t expect to be doing much business with Ontario any longer," said the president in a Truth Social post Thursday evening. "It is WRONG for the Canadians to STEAL one of the greatest IDM and hauntology duos in MUSIC HISTORY! As your PRESIDENT I will not stand for this INJUSTICE! Boards of America belongs to America, not Canada or Governor Carney! THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER! PRESIDENT DONALD J. TRUMP."
Following the signing of the executive order, music streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music announced that they would update their platforms to display "Boards of America" for users in the U.S., while the rest of world will see "Boards of Canada (Boards of America)" instead. Meanwhile, the duo's label, Warp Records, announced that it would be suing the Trump administration, stating that no single government can unilaterally decide the stage name of a 40-year-old electronic music project via executive order.
"I love Boards of America, they're one of the greatest pioneers of the intelligent dance music genre," said Trump in the Oval Office moments after signing the executive order. "Music Has The Right To Children is very good, maybe one of the greatest debut albums ever. Then they made Geogaddi, and wow, what an album. So much imagery, one of the best hauntology projects to be released. The Campfire Headphase is so relaxing. The use of acoustic guitar, or whatever they used, is very smart. I liked Tomorrow's Harvest, very sad, quite depressing, but underrated. Inferno is very nice, I love ‘Deep Time,’ wow, what an amazing ambient song, very powerful. Did you know they used ‘The Word Becomes Flesh’ in the Backrooms movie? I just learnt that. Great stuff, but it's Boards of America now."
At press time, Trump was informed that Boards of Canada is in fact comprised of brothers Mike Sandison and Marcus Eoin, born and currently residing in Scotland, prompting the White House to immediately begin efforts to annex Scotland as the 51st state.
