Search For Next British Prime Minister To Resign Begins
LONDON—In the wake of British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer announcing he is stepping down as leader of the Labour Party Monday, setting into motion his exit from Downing Street, the search for his replacement who will also meet the same fate begins. "Every decision I've taken has been about putting the country I love first," said Starmer outside 10 Downing Street in front of the infamous lectern where previous UK Prime Ministers like Liz Truss, Boris Johnson, Theresa May and more were thrown out like a used tissue. "That is why I will resign as leader of the Labour Party. I have spoken to His Majesty the King this morning to inform him of my decision, which he has been expecting since I started this job. I will ask the National Executive Committee of the Labour Party to set out a timetable with nominations opening on 9th July to find the next sucker who will be thrown to the wolves in a few years' time." Following Starmer's announcement, former Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham, who recently won the Makerfield by-election to become an MP, was emerging as the likeliest replacement who will find himself in the same situation in a year or two. "Starmer's decision marks the beginning of a transition and it is important that this process is conducted in an orderly and responsible way. I will put myself forward as part of this process, excited and eager to face the same inevitable end so I can join the ranks of our previous leaders falling unceremoniously onto their swords," said Burnham in reaction to the news, reportedly already writing his resignation speech for future use, urging all 403 Labour MPs to prepare their own resignation speeches for when they get their chance to resign as PM. At press time, civil servants were seen replacing the iconic door at No. 10 with a revolving door.
