EU Bans Braille That Matches Background Colour Due To Visibility Concerns

BRUSSELS, BELGIUM—Being hailed as a major win for the visually impaired and blind Saturday, the European Union has banned braille that matches the colour of the background it is on in an effort to make it easier to see. "For too long, braille has been difficult to see on products sold across the EU, as well as other areas like signs. That now comes to an end. From this moment forward, braille will be required to be a distinct colour from the background it is placed upon so that the visually impaired and blind can see it more easily," said President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola while signing the ban into law. "I think its wonderful that the visually impaired and blind will finally be able to see where braille is on a box while they're out shopping. This is why I got into policymaking: to improve the lives of EU citizens and because no one would let me represent Germany in Eurovision," said President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen. After the legislation was signed into law, a group of blind activists who were invited to the signing struggled to find the exit, even with a 10-foot bright green neon sign that read "EXIT" above the door. At press time, EU lawmakers were contemplating a new law that would mandate car horns be 50dB so deaf people can hear oncoming traffic easier.
