OTTAWA, CANADA—Escalating the ongoing trade war between the neighbouring nations, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced Tuesday that his government would impose a 100% tariff on all copies of the Melania documentary in response to U.S. levies.

"We did not choose this conflict, but when our economic alliance is used as a bargaining chip, we must fight back," said Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne during a press conference. "This is why Canada is targeting the core U.S. reserve of self-aggrandising, located right at the seat of power in the White House, inside President Trump himself. We will be imposing a 100% levy on any and all copies of Melania, the documentary made by the president's wife that escaped containment at Amazon MGM Studios and is inflicting boredom across the globe. If the U.S. is going to start a trade war for absolutely no reason, then Canada will make sure it hits them where it hurts most: in the president's very fragile ego."

While experts do not expect the tariffs to hinder the broader U.S. economy itself, given that Melania was a critical and commercial failure, the move is seen as a direct attack against Trump and his family, of which the president cares exclusively about the former. Insiders report that the Canadian government is hoping the tariffs on the box office bomb will bruise Trump's ego to such an extent that he will rush back to the negotiating table solely to lift restrictions on his wife's propaganda film.

"The United States has left Canada no other option but to utilise our ultimate economic instrument: presidential ego death," said Carney in an interview with lesser news outlet CBC News. "Canada did not instigate this trade war, but we are committed to resolving it on rational terms. To be transparent, none of us have viewed the Melania documentary. That's 104 minutes we could use on something far more important. But I did have an aide brief me on the synopsis from Wikipedia, and from what I can gather, the film is severely lacking in quality. Nevertheless, we understand the administration values this documentary far more than the trading rates of seafood or cheese. So our position is that the president's delicate pride will be his downfall, compelling him to crawl back to beg for relief on his wife's vanity project."

At press time, U.S. President Donald Trump insinuated that Carney was speaking the language of an "illegal alien DEI hire dog eater," when in actuality the prime minister was simply speaking in French.
